Me personally, I like the Hey Siri feature and ability to remotely issue commands enough to leave it on and just laugh at the occasional random times it turns itself on. Rather, I think the state of operating systems on such devices is pathetic, well below expectations for the prices charged for these useless, ever-breaking toys

To fix this just cut out part of your screen protector to make room for the mic on the back and your sound recording problems should be thrown out the window

I can see how pressing the phone could help on some phones, but it this case the little connector strip needed to be realigned since no amount of pressing would have helped it make contact. I changed it to plain iPhone, sound was back! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
